Plastered throughout one city in northern California are signs stating the same message, stirring some controversy among the local residents.

But it’s all part of the plan, according to Stu Streeter, the lead pastor of Disciples Church in Folsom.

Using the slogan as a way to attract those who have stopped attending church, Streeter, along with Adam Adams, his connection ministry director, have teamed up to ironically bring people back into the church, reported El Dorado Hills Telegraph.

“The whole point behind it was twofold,” the pastor told EDHT. “To stir awareness and that we have something to say.”

The message was not targeted towards his congregation, but rather for potential churchgoers.

Like us on Facebook

“You probably saw our signs … and thought ‘What’s Church Sucks?’” the website churchsucks.net states. “The sad fact is that sometimes church does suck.”

“It sucks when people are made to feel like outsiders, or when power gets abused. It sucks when leaders don’t serve. When people are selfish, when we give up on people, or when talking trumps listening, church sucks!”

“Church in general doesn’t suck, but when power is abused or you’re an outsider, it can be a bad experience for some people,” Streeter clarified to EDHT. “I want to remind people that those are isolated instances. The churches in Folsom are wonderful friends and we believe in them.”

“We’re trying to return church to what it’s supposed to be.”

“This is kind of like our way of saying, ‘Jesus didn’t suck, and neither should His church.’”

Adams also commented in a forum on MyFolsom.com, “Too many people have missed or disregarded the opportunity to be connected with Jesus and Community because, let’s be honest, church sucks sometimes. We’re ready to acknowledge that, engage our community, and speak clearly about Jesus’ real desire for His Church.”

“We put our money where our mouth is and work hard to end the things Jesus wants to end, and begin the things Jesus wants to begin.”

Though the campaign was meant to draw people back into the church, the signs haven’t exactly been welcomed by the community.

“We’ve gotten a bunch [of negative reaction],” Streeter mentioned to EDHT. “Usually it’s from really good people who haven’t read the whole story (on the website).”

One Folsom resident relayed to EDHT that she was not pleased with the signs or the ads in the paper. “I don’t want my children to see this,” she disclosed.

The message behind the signs and the newspapers, she believed, did not translate to children.

The church also reported witnessing one woman yank out one of the signs and place it in her car.

Responding to much of the backlash, the lead pastor penned on the city forum, “I know for many this seems like a terrible idea, even sacrilegious. And yet for others, the campaign has been great, a means to reignite a flame once barely flickering. I can best respond to all your thoughts and some concerns with a story from Jesus’ life, found in all four of the Gospels.”

Sharing the story found in the Scriptures where Jesus cleared out the temple courts and overturned the tables of the money changers, Streeter summarized that out of all the things Jesus could have done to emphasize his point, he chose to flip tables over and rattle awareness.

“Jesus looked out at the state of the church in his day and felt the need to ‘rattle awareness’ and ‘say something’ about the state of the religious community. We feel the same way. We know we are part of the problem,” Streeter confessed.

“We pray our signs and the more importantly, subsequent talks I will give at church, will be a catalyst to be sure Jesus does not need to flip the tables at Disciples Church. Equally, we pray and hope this will cause more and more people to re-engage in the beauty that IS the gathering we call ‘church.’”

Starting this Easter, the Disciples Church will begin a new series called “Church Sucks,” looking at six perceived problems that sometimes drives people away from church.

“It’s a conversation about Jesus’ real intentions for His Church,” the website informed.

The first message of the series will be delivered on Easter Sunday, April 24, entitled “When You’re an Outsider.” Special service times are being offered this week only at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

According to their campaign website, they are simply “a group of people trying to learn how to follow Jesus in real life, as real people.”

“We work hard to be the Church and people Jesus called us to be, and one small part of that is not sucking.”

“Church Sucks, sometimes. But we’re not content with that.”

Disciples Church, which is part of the Growing Healthy Churches Network, is less than two years old and touts “real God, real people, real life.” Its vision is for people far from God or His church to be engaged and inspired to pursue real life through Jesus in a creative and life-giving community.

You’ve seen the commercials, maybe even noticed one of their cars or SUV’s driving down the road as a mobile billboard-Accident Forgiveness. Under this particular insurance company’s plan, by paying more on the front-end, an addition to your premium, you can have an accident without your premium being effect-depending on which “accident forgiveness” option you choose. My question is simple, “Is this really a forgiveness program, or are you/they simply hedging their bets?” What if God worked that way? Fortunately, He doesn’t.

There are no “hedging of bets” or “increasing the odds” when it comes to God. This week, as we approach the Cross of Good Friday, we are reminded that when it came to paying the price for our fallen nature, our brokenness, the premium was more costly than we could bear. And in an amazing act of love and grace, we see justice, the cost of our fallen nature, collide with mercy, of all things, in the least imaginable places-The Cross.

At the Cross, our premium was paid, it is paid, not in part, but in whole. Paid In Full. Our debt or consequence for living our way, broken off from God, was paid in full and all we have to do is come to understand and know The One who paid our check, our premium. And as an amazing twist, as we get to know Him, we find out what our “premium” was really about. We realize His payment was less a convenience and more a necessity. When this happens it changes everything, it changes us beyond our comprehension.

If you haven’t gotten to know your Benefactor, now is a great time to do it.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other.” -John 15:9

This morning’s orchestra is filled with the sounds of Blue Jays, Mockingbirds, Morning Doves, Cardinals and Mud Martins, interrupted by the hourly chimes of the church bells and the occasional truck lumbering down the nearby highway. An occasional crow darting by, the gliding buzzard and the purposeful flight path of a hawk also fills the air. It’s really a peaceful morning, yet thus isn’t where the real activity is, that’s on the ground, 25 yards from where I sit. The activity surrounds, what a neighbor of mine, years ago, referred to as a ” furry-tailed rat.” Squirrels.
There they are, bouncing from place to place, making near-perfect arches with each bound, coming to a halt, tail still bent, digging a couple of inches, then moving on the the next spot. They are looking for something they believe to be there, or at least nearby. They know it’s there, positive, to the point that they dig. They dig and don’t give up.
What if we sought grace in the same way? What if we, knowing it is out there, for us, decided to seek and find the grace that God has offered us through Jesus Christ? The truth, what we know, is that Christ came into the world that an incredible encounter of mercy and justice might reconcile us to God. And being far from perfect, right, or at peace, we needed something to restore a broken relationship with God, our creator and author. This reconciliation came in the form of Christ: The Christ of Good Friday, The Christ of Easter and The Christ of The Kingdom of God. The is the Christ of Yesterday, of Today and of Tomorrow.
There is an old saying, “even a blind squirrel find a nut sometimes,” well, you’ve got more going for you than a blind squirrel ever did.

Beauty, acceptance, status, these things are manufactured in our society today. We are firm in what we want, demanding in what we find acceptable and still we find frustration more than satisfaction. Our world, our neighborhoods and even our homes are filled with abandoned hope of satisfaction. Be it things we wear, play with, use and simply thought we would like to look at, over time, the new wears off, the expectation is not met or something new comes into our life, and we move on.

Running by an abandoned home, I noticed two reminders that beauty shows up, with our without our permission. Long after the family left this home, berries are growing and roses are in bloom. Neither asked permission to thrive, yet they do. These plants were not cultivated, and for the most part go unnoticed, until yesterday.

Grace happens, and is present, without our permission. Grace thrives. not by our doing, but because of God’s love. Those present as Jesus was being judged, sentenced and led to the cross failed to see grace in happening, yet it did. In fact, grace still does happen. Can you see it?
